The lymphatic system is the garbage disposal unit of the body. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) therapy has been developed to stimulate the lymphatic flow in vessels and lymph nodes and to clear any blockages. It is a gentle massage technique which involves direction specific strokes that help remove waste products and toxins from the body’s tissues, which is particularly important for people with lymphoedema.
Lymphoedema is recognized by an unusual swelling in any part of the body. It is most common in legs or arms after surgery or radiation therapy. Lymphoedema can be successfully managed with complex physical therapy (CPT). CPT involves MLD, bandaging or the wearing of a compression garment, skin care and special exercises, including hydrotherapy.
There are a number of benefits to having pregnancy massage. Some of these include a reduction in sciatic nerve pain and other muscle pain related to postural changes, decrease stress and anxiety levels, help relieve headaches, leg cramps, insomnia and fluid retention. Special care will be taken to ensure you are in a comfortable, safe position, depending on what trimester you are in.
